The ritual of Hochzeitschiessen (Wedding Shooting):
At dusk of the weddingday, some people of the village gather in front of the bride‘s home, starting the so called „Wedding Shooting“ by unloading firearms to signal this special day for the whole village - until the groom arrives at midday to take the bride to church. In this particular case, it was the Hubraumchaoten (a gang of motorsportfanatics who are specialized in the tuning of american cars) who built a gascannon out of carparts in the design of an anti-aircraft cannon (flak). I was immediately fascinated with the cannon and because it was the bride’s special day she had to be photographed next to the cannon. When I placed the cannon as an object in front of the photographic print depicting the bride next to the cannon with a family house and a red Volkswagen in the background, I did so because I felt that it allowed some magical contact with the original experience.
About the time this photo was taken, the international press reported in great detail that in the Iraq war at least two ongoing wedding ceremonies were attacked mistakenly by the US American Military. In spring 2004 a fourteen year old boy was shot to death in Falludja also because shots were fired in the course of a wedding ceremony. They were wrongly interpreted by the US Military and provoked military actions.
This work is composed of three parts: a life size photoprint depicting the bride next to the cannon, a family house and a red volkswagen in the background; the cannon as a readymade placed in front of the print and finally a video registering the shooting in the course of the event.
Das Ritual des Hochzeitschiessens:
Im Morgengrauen des Hochzeitstages versammeln sich Leute vom Dorf vor dem Elternhaus der Braut um Schüsse, oder Böller abzufeuern, solange bis mittags der Bräutigam ankommt um die Braut zur Kirche zu führen.
Bei dieser Hochzeit haben die Hubraumchaoten, ein Verein von Mechanikern, welche auf die Reparatur und das Tuning von amerikanischen Autos spezialisiert sind, das Schiessen veranstaltet. Für diesen Anlass haben sie eine Gaskanone im Design einer Flak aus diversen Autoteilen zusammengeschweist. Ich war sofort von diesem Gerät fasziniert und da es ein sehr spezieller Tag der Braut war, musste sie natürlich auch mit der Kanone auf ein Bild.
Die Kanone als Original (oder auch Readymade), habe ich bewusst vor dem Fotoprint, auf welchem die Braut neben ebendieser Kanone zu sehen ist (im Hintergrund des Bildes ein Einfamilienhaus und ein roter Golf) installiert, um die photographische Reproduktion dieses Momentes der dokumentarischen Realität zu entreissen und einen magischen Kontakt zu dem Event herzustellen.
Ungefähr zur selben Zeit als dieses Foto entstand, wurde in der internationalen Presse von mindestens zwei irrtümlichen Attacken des US Militärs auf Hochzeitsgesellschaften berichtet. Im Frühjahr 2004 wurde ein 14jähriger Junge in Falludja erschossen, ebenfalls weil die Schüsse bei einer Hochzeitsfeierlichkeit mißinterpretiert wurden.
Diese Arbeit besteht aus drei Teilen: einem lebensgrossen Fotoprint, der die Braut neben der Kanone, im Hintergrund ein Einfamilienhaus und einen roten Golf zeigt; die Kanone im Original als Readymade vor dem Print und als drittes Element zeigt ein Video das Schiessen mit ebendieser Kanone.
